From my perspective as the executive director of a music school, the concept of innovation can be an unsettling thing. Just as soon as your programs are rock solid, suddenly you’re scrambling to find the details of some breakthrough in the nonprofit sector or figure out how to incorporate trending small business practices.
But, when 49% of your organization's funding comes from charitable donations and grants, you learn to be innovative pretty quickly. You even get good at it.
That's why Hopewell Music was given the 2017 Minnesota Nonprofit Award for Innovation but presented by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and Propel Nonprofits.
A place like Hopewell Music serves as a reflection of its community. Like the greater Northside community, Hopewell is not just making it work – despite the daily challenges we face, we are thriving, always finding new ways to deliver on our mission of providing access to music education for everyone regardless of age, race, ability, or circumstance. Often, our youth students are dropped off by busy parents who fearlessly fight rush hour while other students transport themselves and cumbersome instruments on the bus to make it to lessons.
Don't students who work that hard deserve high-quality music education, even if they can't pay top dollar for it? This giving season, I hope you will donate to put the power of music in the hands of North Minneapolis students.
